Dental Bridges F.A.Q
How much does a dental bridge cost?
This depends on the length of the bridge and how many teeth are going to be replaced. A bridge utilizes the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to hold the bridge which is cemented to the teeth to hold it in place. The fee is the number number of units. One missing tooth with a tooth holding it in place on each side is a 3 unit bridge. The fee is usually the crown fee times the number of units.
What is the difference between a dental bridge and an implant?
A bridge is held in place by the adjacent teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The adjacent teeth are prepared to receive the bridge it is one solid unit. THis includes the missing tooth or teeth and the teeth on either side of the space. An implant is essentially a titanium “root” upon which a crown can be screwed into. The titanium fuses to the bone which surrounds it. The implant stands alone in the replacement of the tooth. The adjacent teeth are not prepared as they are with a bridge.
Is a dental bridge permanent?
Nothing is permanent! The factors in longevity are oral health habits, the teeth supporting the bridge can still decay. A long bridge has more stress due to chewing pressures. People who grind or clench should have a night guard to reduce the physical forces exerted on the prosthesis. That being said, we just saw a 6 unit bridge (very long) actually break after 15 years of use. The patient was chewing almost exclusively on those teeth alone which is a very heavy load indeed!
How long does a dental bridge procedure take?
This usually is completed in 2 visits. The first is the preparation visit where the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and a temporary is made. The patient leaves with a temporary and half a smile with the numbness from the injection (joke). The second visit is 2-3 weeks later where the temporary is removed and the final bridge is cemented in place. Generally, the first visit is 1.5 hours and the second is ½ hour.
