Dental Bridges in San Francisco

Restore your smile with a dental bridge

Missing teeth are not just a cosmetic problem as they can impact your dental and overall health in many ways. Specifically, missing teeth lead to:

  • Higher risk of gum or periodontal disease
  • Higher risk of tooth decay
  • The misalignment of teeth
  • Speech disorders
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Loss or damage of adjacent teeth
  • TMJ or Temporomandibular joint disorder
  • The weakening of the jawbone

Your dental health is the key to your overall health. When missing teeth are not replaced for a long time, this can weaken and affect the structure and shape of the jawbone. At our dental practice in Brisbane, CA, Dr. James Fitzgerald expertly repairs and restores your smile and dental health with dental bridges in San Francisco and other restorative services.

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a restorative treatment for missing teeth. A dental bridge has two or more crowns that are cemented to anchoring or abutment teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth. Artificial teeth that are known as pontics are connected to the crowns and these fill the gap created by the missing teeth. This ensures strong anchoring of the bridge and prevents it from moving.

Types of dental bridges

At our Brisbane practice, we offer different types of dental bridges:

A traditional bridge is anchored on either side with the help of dental crowns placed on natural teeth. They can also be anchored to crowns on dental implants on either side of the missing teeth. Artificial teeth are made from alloys or porcelain and help restore the functionality and aesthetics of your teeth.

In a Cantilever dental bridge, the pontic is anchored to a crown that is cemented to one abutment tooth as compared to the traditional bridges which are supported by two adjacent teeth.

The Maryland dental bridges are also anchored to two adjacent natural abutment teeth. While the traditional bridge is anchored to crowns, the Maryland bridge uses a porcelain or metal framework that is bonded to the abutment teeth.

Implant-supported bridges make use of dental implants in place of frameworks or crowns. One dental implant is placed surgically for each missing tooth and anchors the bridge in position.

Dental Bridges F.A.Q

How much does a dental bridge cost?

This depends on the length of the bridge and how many teeth are going to be replaced. A bridge utilizes the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to hold the bridge which is cemented to the teeth to hold it in place. The fee is the number number of units. One missing tooth with a tooth holding it in place on each side is a 3 unit bridge. The fee is usually the crown fee times the number of units.

What is the difference between a dental bridge and an implant?

A bridge is held in place by the adjacent teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The adjacent teeth are prepared to receive the bridge it is one solid unit. THis includes the missing tooth or teeth and the teeth on either side of the space. An implant is essentially a titanium “root” upon which a crown can be screwed into. The titanium fuses to the bone which surrounds it. The implant stands alone in the replacement of the tooth. The adjacent teeth are not prepared as they are with a bridge.

Is a dental bridge permanent?

Nothing is permanent! The factors in longevity are oral health habits, the teeth supporting the bridge can still decay. A long bridge has more stress due to chewing pressures. People who grind or clench should have a night guard to reduce the physical forces exerted on the prosthesis. That being said, we just saw a 6 unit bridge (very long) actually break after 15 years of use. The patient was chewing almost exclusively on those teeth alone which is a very heavy load indeed!

How long does a dental bridge procedure take?

This usually is completed in 2 visits. The first is the preparation visit where the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and a temporary is made. The patient leaves with a temporary and half a smile with the numbness from the injection (joke). The second visit is 2-3 weeks later where the temporary is removed and the final bridge is cemented in place. Generally, the first visit is 1.5 hours and the second is ½ hour.
